FOR ITS 40TH ANNIVERSARY, AIRCALIN SETS COURSE FOR A MORE SUSTAINABLE DIMENSION

Created in 1983, the international airline Aircalin celebrates this year its 40th anniversary.

On this occasion, a campaign will be deployed tomorrow on its different markets to underline its sustainable development achievements and commitments.

With 40 years of experience at the service of New Caledonia, Aircalin is now a mature airline, recognized internationally and driven by many development projects.

Conscious of the social and environmental issues associated with its activity and as an employer and major player in New Caledonia, Aircalin is committed to a responsible approach to sustainable development. This is why it took the opportunity of its 40th anniversary to mark a turning point by adopting, as of 24 November, the new signature:

This signature: New Caledonia, it’s in our nature, will be deployed within a vast brand campaign showing Aircalin’s commitment to an activity more respectful of people and nature.

If the signature will stay over time, this first campaign is also celebrating the anniversary with the logo displayed on the right.

A film as a pillar of the campaign

The flagship of this campaign, running until 15 December, is a film made in New Caledonia, with a text co-authored by the producer Walla Prod and the Caledonian slam artist Passil Swamo. Paul Wamo Paul Wamo slams the text and Walla Prod signs the original music. Entitled A Flower in the Sky, it will be widely broadcasted (Aircalin’s aircrafts, TV, cinema, radios, social media, etc.) to settle the new signature for good. Celebrating our 40th anniversary! In order to involve the public in Aircalin’s 40th anniversary, games and promotions are planned from tomorrow until December:

  • – an online game for a chance to win plane tickets;
  • – a prize of two golden tickets offered in a draw among travellers on board 20 flights between 24 November and 1st December;
  • – a promotional code for use on the website www.aircalin.com

Why sustainable development?

Very conscious about the fragility of New Caledonia as a world hot spot for biodiversity, Aircalin is fully committed to this approach with a view to reduce its environmental footprint. It responds in particular to the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s commitments, taken in October 2022, which ambitious objective is zero carbon emission by 2050.

Aircalin’s commitments to a sustainable development

Officialised in the first half of 2023, the company’s sustainable development approach focuses on reducing its environmental footprint through four commitments.

Commitment n° 1: reduce CO2 emissions

> Thanks to the complete renewal of its fleet with the acquisition of the A330neo and A320neo (the second one is expected at the end of the year), Aircalin’s fuel consumption and carbon emissions are reduced by 15 to 20% per seat. > New operational measures are constantly implemented to further reduce fuel consumption and, consequently, carbon emissions, such as procedures for maintenance, for eco-piloting/green operations (flight plan, provision of a fuel optimisation software), for reducing weights loaded onto aircrafts (use of ultralight trolleys, digital press, luggage containers).

Objective for 2030: reducing emissions by 25 % compared to 2019 thanks to the development of the “Sustainable Aviation Fuel” (SAF). The SAF reduces greenhouse gas emissions, among which CO2, by up to 80 % compared to the conventional aviation fuel (Jet A1 kerosene).

Commitment n° 2: contribute to environmental compensation

> As a transport company flying under the French flag, Aircalin participates since 2020 in the CORSIA program, a carbon compensation and reduction device for the world civil aviation initiated by the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) and supported by IATA (International Air Transport Association).

Commitment n° 3: sustainable consumption

> The use of recyclable/recycled items on board Aircalin’s aircrafts has become a priority (cups, snack baskets, cutlery, various packaging, etc.). These efforts have already reduced polluting waste by 25 tonnes per year (in normal operation).

> The company promotes recycling (paper, old uniforms, batteries, etc.) and donation (decommissioned computer equipment).

Commitment n° 4: contribute to the preservation and protection of biodiversity

> Signatory of the Buckingham Palace Declaration against the transport of protected species (2018), Aircalin takes part in the initiative launched in 2022 on this issue by the WWF France – with the involvement of the WWF office in New Caledonia. Six awareness-raising sessions have been organised this year for the freight and stopover teams in Tontouta. Actions are also being taken with the company’s clients and sub-contractors.
